The balancing tank is an essential part of the overflow swimming pools.

How does the balancing tank work

In a traditional skimmers pool, water is sucked directly by the pump into the pool; it is then returned back there after filtration and optionally treatment and heating.

The balancing tank is an intermediate element that exists only in overflow pools and it is located between the gutter of the overflow pool and the pump. It should be installed to hold water overflow before it reaches the filter system. It is also knows as surge tank.

Its role is simple: the water overflows from the pool in a gutter * and goes into the tank, by gravitation; From there, the water is sucked by the pump, filtered, treated, heated and returned to the basin. Thanks to the tank, the overflow swimming pool operates in a closed circuit; without it, the water would get lost in nature and you should compensate each day for water losses. It is, of course, inconceivable

* Overflow gutter: a kind of channel that is located at the level of the terrace or below the swimming pool, for example on a length of the pool, and which collects the water when it overflows.

The different compensation tanks

There are two main kinds and the choice will greatly depend on how the pool itself is built and by whom.

The concrete compensation tanks is the solution chosen by those who called upon a builder. The swimming pool and the tank are constructed in the same time.

You can also purchase a manufactured tank. They can be made either of concrete or of plastic materials (molded high density polyethylene for instance).

If the tank does not have to be buried, depending on the configuration of the plot, plastic tanks can be used. This is a cheaper option.

Balancing tank sizing

If it is undersized, the water could escape. Obviously, this would be a waste of water but also of chemicals. This situation could happen when there are more swimmers than usual or when it is raining. On the other hand, by building it too large, you waste your money.

You have probably already read that the volume of the surge tank must be between 5 and 10% of that of the swimming pool. This is the theory but several factors are involved:

  • The volume of the pool, of course but also,
  • the length of the overflow,
  • the number of swimmers,
the flow rate of the filter pump.

What is the price of a balancing tank

For example, the prices of a 3000 liters balancing tank range from about 500 $ for a manufactured concrete tank up to 1000 $ for a plastic underground tank.

Finally, pay attention to the cheap plastic tanks which can only be buried with various precautions: At the end, this option could be more expensive.

Note: all surge tanks must have an opening (manhole type) for possible cleaning and maintenance.

To operate properly, the tank must be equipped with an overflow drain and a water level regulator.
